Discover the whimsical and strange folklore of the Danish Midsummer.
Abstract
This website will examine Sankt Hans Aften or Saint John’s Eve, the Danish Midsummer celebration on June 24th of every year. This website will delve into Danish midsummer customs and draw comparisons and contrasts with those of other nations and civilizations. Danish midsummer customs originated long before the Christian influence of St. John’s Eve, with pagan summer solstice rituals having been already established. The blending of Christian and pagan customs results in a vibrant festival with elements of the natural and supernatural. Scandinavian societies have commemorated Midsummer for ages, and the custom has spread to other nations' yearly festivals. We will investigate Eastern customs surrounding midsummer and American celebrations of the season. We will examine the hows and whys of the maypole or may branch, the burning of the witch, the celebratory bonfire, and what fertility rites are done.
